danish, I'm pretty sure I'm older than you and also grew up in Colorado, but why does growing up in Colorado give you more of a right to an opinion than anyone else?

The whole point in a site with user-generated reviews is that it gives people a balanced perspective by offering a variety of different opinions from a variety of people, with a variety of backgrounds. That way people can read through all of the reviews and see what matches them best. I feel that someone like me (who wants great freeriding and no crowds) deserves a balanced opinion of the resort just as much as someone like you, or someone like angrysnowboarder, or xadness.

And if you ride so much in CO, I'm surprised you've never heard anything negative about Breck? There's a whole crapload of people who get the WP/Copper pass because they feel that Breck and Keystone suck. Not to mention people at Loveland, who talk shit on all of Summit County. Everyone who as an opinion that's different from yours is not an idiot. They just disagree with you.

And by the way, not sure if you were alive in the 80's, but ever since then, "family friendly" has been the typical business model of most of these destination resorts (with the exception of places like Aspen who aim for the high brow party crowd). They don't make money off poor ski bums. They make money off families with disposable income to blow on 4 bedroom condos and equipment rentals. Why do you think Keystone put a bunny hill at the top of the gondola? So the stoners could have something to ride when they're totally wasted?

Chances are if you've ever been to a real resort area you've noticed that prices seem overly steep compared to where you're from. Now if you've partaken in the lifestyle of being a resort town "bum" then you may or may not have experienced the locals discount. But much like the title what makes you a local?



Now that Christmas is over I've been encountering an abundance of people coming to my place of employment asking for the locals discount. Now if I've never seen you before and you still can't pronounce my name right when its written on my name tag plain as day, makes me believe that you're a local? Its something that perplexes me as to why people think they're a local. Is it because you own/ rent a house here, is it the fact you're newly issued drivers license says you are, or is it the fact that you just wish to belong to the inner sanctum of us mountain folk?

A friend of mine says you're truly a local when you don't give a shit about living here and are completely over it and want to move. Now I don't agree with that but I will say you're a local when the things that bother all the new people moving here don't get to you. Like the lack of bread and milk at the grocery store, idiots that can't drive, long lift lines during peak season, and the general lack of courtesy from tourists.

I have noticed that the kook factor of people that want the locals discount. Last night I had 2 guys keep saying to me but we're real homies and we're down. Ok you're a 45 year old suburban white guy with a son who thinks he's gangster. I am a long haired, handle bar mustached, metal head. Does it look like I care if you're a "homie", fuck no. The better one is the person that wants the locals discount on something thats already 50% off. Huh you're getting 50% off and you still want more and yet no one here has ever seen you before. When I lived in Steamboat and was working at a shop up there this guy brought up a grip load of stuff to buy and puts it on the counter. He then asked me for the locals discount and whipped out the temporary drivers license they issue. The damn thing had been issued that morning. I was like so you think because you just moved here you get a discount. I laughed in his face and said you're going to have to spend a bit more money with us before I'll consider giving you a discount.

I've never once asked for the locals discount in anywhere that I've lived. If I get it cool its an added bonus, if I don't its cool cause I was expecting to pay just that. Generally at the restaurants and shops I frequent I do get a hook up. Awesome, I'll tip more cause they hooked me up or what not.

Ok cool you decided that mountain town living was a good idea but you're bummed at the higher cost of living. News flash people the higher cost of living comes associated with the option of living up here. Its a give and take yes I pay more in rent than my friends in Denver but I can walk out my door and see Keystone and I have 5 resorts all within a short radius. People just need to learn their place.
