BURTON HERO

Like a nice malt scotch, it's an acquired taste. I can't wait to try rocker on a high-end board.

Took out my Burton Hero for the first time at Okemo this past weekend.

Conditions: variable with a mix of new powder (1"), man-made, granular, ice, hard pack, and tons of wind. Not a lot of people so it was a good chance to play around.

Size: 155

Price: retails for $399 (kudos to Burton for not releasing their rocker on a $900 board)

Tech: The Hero is a lot of fun. I was curious to see how Burton's V-rocker would compare to the other rocker versions. Burton's rocker is between the bindings and also progresses from the bindings to tip and bindings to tail. Unlike the Banana which come with Magnetraction (MTX), the Hero uses Burton's PDE, pressure distribution edges to handle the ice and hard stuff. The construction of the board is middle of the road with a SuperFly core. Some new things for 2009 are Grip and Rip edge tune, Scoop tips (also found on the Fix and Seven) and Strait 28 sidewalls combined with 10:45. And of course it has the Channel/ICS/EST slider system which lets you have any stance you like (up to 26" and change) Note: I also didn't do any detuning on this board. The Rip and Grip edges were good to go straight out of the box. That was a nice touch.

Pros: This board was stable at high speeds (unlike some other rocker boards). It was very lively and Burton-like. Buttering, pressing, flatlands and spinning were all great, truly made me feel like a Hero. I even did some late 360s and only made it probably 280 around and the rocker's upturned base saved me more than once. Rocker would also great for any beginner as it prevents you from the dreaded scorpion/edge-catches of death. The best part of this incarnation of rocker is how well I could carve at speed. Also the tiny bits of pow I found were INCREDIBLE, truly surfing the snow.

Cons: It definitely bucked me a few times if I wasn't paying attention or was leaning too far back. Rocker has a learning curve and requires a few adjustments (aka a few more days under my belt). With my bad knees, the combo of the Hero construction and the EST bindings (used the Uninc 08 ESTs) were a bit too much for me. I think this was mainly due to the hard snow. I didn't feel that I got the same amount of pop when ollieing, and I didn't quite feel as comfortable in my general riding. But I'm also used to riding a 158 not a 155. I'll definitely keep a rocker board in the quiver, but not sure if it is a "one and only" type board.
